By NM Leland Fuerstman

Top Section Still Undecided; "Amazing Al" Wins Middle Section!; "Flash" Gordon Perfect in Lower Section of Wendy's XI
A grand total of 45 of the finest minds in the area obviously neglected their more important responsibilities and chose, instead, to compete in Wendy's XI. Adjournments on the top two boards have delayed the decision as to whom will win the coveted "Title," however, CCC Favorite Son William F. "Frankie" Newton II (2161) seems to have the edge in his adjourned position against CCC rising star, 16 year old Expert Justin Daniel (2022). (See Game 0091) On Board:2, with the Black pieces, NM Leland Fuerstman (2041) has only a slight "spacial" advantage versus NM Daniel Liu (2000) in an otherwise even King and 6 Pawn ending. ("isn't that spacial?") (See Game 0092) (Since NM Liu was cordial enough to reveal his "sealed" 42nd move with an offer of Draw, I shall respectfully decline by revealing my intended response: 42...a4!  LF)  A win by Fuerstman will earn him an unprecedented fourth consecutive CCC title. Also, in the Top Section, Tarokh Taefi (1791) took it on the chin from David Jaap (1821), while the other half of "Team Salisbury," returnee to CCC competition Greg Hall (1850),  dispatched of CCC Internal Affairs Committee Chairman Paul F. Lucas (1643).  In addition, Gary Newson (1914) and Patrick McCartney (1821) drew.  In the Middle Section, CCC Lower Section Representative Alphonse "Amazing Al" Ashamalla (1300) literally brought the crowd to it's feet, when, after only a few minutes of play, he announced "Checkmate" to Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway (1641)!(See Game 0090)   In this Tournament Director's experience, this is the first time a player has won the Lower Section (with 5-0!) and then won the Middle Section (with 4-1) back to back!  In achieving this remarkable feat "Amazing Al" upset four players with ratings of more than 300 points greater than his own, losing only one game to spoiler Doug "Sky" Millsaps (1563).  Wow!! (Now, I don't know how this guy does it, but, I can state with certainty, that  Alphonse Ashamalla is the most well liked member of our chess club, period.) "Amazing Al," you are in inspiration to us all.  Keep it up!! Also in the Middle Section, Slobodan Sinanovic (Unr) manhandled Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1613) while, with the Black pieces, "Iron" Mike Eberhardinger (1631) molested Mike Isner (1599). In the Lower Section, Daryl "Flash" Gordon (1302) followed Ashamalla's footsteps by scoring a perfect 5-0 and graduating to the Middle Section! Look out guys, here comes "Flash."  Tied for 2nd-3rd were Brandon Brown and Michael Shoup each with 3.5-1.5. Other Lower Section winners were: Joe Feiler, Kevin Smith, Don Norwood and Jim Ulaky. For all results see (Current Crosstable) Good luck at the Land of the Sky!

CCC Continues to Seek New Location; John's Restaurant Just Too Far Away
Over the past two months, officials of the Charlotte Chess Club have been searching for a new "temporary" home.  Though John's Restaurant would have been a perfect facility for our purposes, ie. modern, comfortable individually lighted booths, room for 100 players, open till 11:00pm, great menu, friendly, "quiet" employees, direct parking, etc. the facility was located "off the beaten path."  What we have negotiated, however, is the use of the Ole Smokehouse Dining Room on Montford Dr. (Off Park Rd) for Saturday tournaments.  Hopefully, if they like us, we will try to talk them into allowing us to use  it on Wednesday evenings as well. But, for now we will continue to meet on Wednesday evenings at Wendy's. Our first Ole Smokehouse tournament has been planned for Saturday, February 26. (See Upcoming Events) See ya' there! LF
Liu Captures Denny's A-1 Title; Dr. Sztyber Performs Surgery on Lower Section

A dozen of the Metrolina area's most competitive chessplayers installed chains on their tires, caravaned to Ft. Mill, SC, and  participated in Denny's A-1 on Super Bowl Saturday! In the Top Section, NM Daniel Liu (2000) pocketed $60 after having dispatched of David Jaap (1821) and Gary Newsom (1914) before drawing his final round against Patrick McCartney (1783).  (See Game 0089) Equal 2nd-3rd winning $15 each were Gary Newsom (1914) and PatrickMcCartney (1783) who each score 2-1.  In the Lower Section, Dr. Gerard Sztyber (1513), after having driven all the way from Alabama, preformed various procedures on Don Norwood, Mike Isner, and Rob Morse to score a perfect 3-0 and carry home $60 (Please give Governor Wallace my regards...) Equal 2nd-3rd with 2-1 and winning $15 were Jerome DeBell and Rob Morse. (Our next 3-round Saturday tournament will be held at "The Ole Smokehouse Dining Room" on Montford Dr. (Off Park. Rd.) on Feb. 26). Fuerstman directed.
